Salon demands coup

The values of the American self professed liberal left are surely a sight to be hold. Salon magazine has published an incredible article. It demands the overthrow of the legitimately elected president of America because of the violence in Charlottesville at the weekend.

The argument (if I may grant it the honorific) runs along the following lines. Donald Trump used "dog whistle" racism to get elected; he is therefore responsible for the existence of racism and all its manifestations; and so the march at the weekend is proof that Trump must be deposed. If something strikes you as odd about the author's ideas of logic and evidence - I can only assume that you are not a self professed American liberal leftist.

There is not just something odd about the evidence and logic: it is utterly bonkers. Let's start with the dog whistle. Why does the author claim Trump used dog whistle racism? The answer is simple. It is because the author cannot produce any evidence of Trump being racist and Trump using racism. So Bob (that's the author's name) resorts to invisible, inaudible evidence. This is technically known as just making stuff up.

The next link in this chain of illogic is because Trump has allegedly benefited from imaginary racism, he is therefore responsible for all racism. Even if we allow ourselves to "hear" these dog whistles, it does not follow that Trump is responsible for any alleged actions of others. There is such a thing as incitement to violence. But that's not what Bob is accusing Trump of. No, Bob is embarrassed to be an American by Trump and that's the crime. How dare Trump win the election? So for Bob, Trump's "between the lines" (again with the it may be invisible but it's there, believe me, approach to evidence) fascism is the cause of the violence and the racism.

Perhaps, aware of the poverty of this argument, Bob resorts to President Trump's condemnation of the violence at Charlottesville. Bob, apparently believes that this proves that Trump must be removed from office because it was meek - obviously Bob is no follower of Jesus, who reportedly had a rather high opinion of meekness.

And just for good measure Bob rounds off his alleged argument by making it perfectly clear the American liberal left, whether in the guise of Black Lives Matter, Antifa, or any other manifestation never engage in any violence, and certainly not political violence, aka terrorism.

So, according to Bob, President Trump should be removed from office. After all, why would one bother about little things like, democracy, freedom of speech, the right to assemble, elections, the constitution. Bob finds Trump obnoxious, surely that should be enough for everyone.

One really does have to wonder in awe at the mindless, illogic, evidence-free, morality-is-my-exclusive-property world view of the American self professed liberal left.

Chelsea Handler actually called for a military coup the other day. Seems like that should be ‘sedition,’ but she’ll undoubtedly not only get away with it, but will be celebrated for her ‘brave stand’ against “tyranny,” as this author will be by the left he’s pandering to with this dogma.

It is clearly a crime under the Smith Act.

I thought so to, but… Yet more proof our system is severely damaged if not outright broken. Nothing will happen to her, or this guy, for their remarks. Quite the opposite, in fact. They will likely both see an increase in interest for them in their respective fields. At the very least, they shouldn’t be able to advance themselves through such inflammatory rhetoric.

A prosecutor would have to prove that her conduct or speech INCITED the military to rebel. There is no military coup in progress at this time, only the political coup. The defense would probably argue an excited utterance/emotional-utterance and stupidity.

There’s no requirement for her remarks to have actually succeeded in order to qualify as sedition.

Moron, how do you know that there is no coup in progress at this time?

According to what I read, she’ll be able to slip by:
        .
Brandenburg v. Ohio, 395 U.S. 444 (1969), was a landmark United States Supreme Court case based on the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Court held that government cannot punish inflammatory speech unless that speech is "directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action.

They said it better than I did. I couldn’t think of any one person, or obscure comedian, who had the influence to get the military to revolt.

There are still 13 states that have laws against this kind of talk, but they generally follow the same guidelines from Brandenburg v. Ohio. Since there’s no credible belief that she could influence the military in any way, there’s no real “threat.” However, had she made the same remarks to someone, or a group of people, that had already professed such beliefs and goals, the Secret Service would already have her.

There are other avenues of redress for such commentary, but there has to be a willingness on the part of whatever authority with prosecutorial powers and jurisdiction to both know AND want to take action.

“Criminal anarchy in the United States is the doctrine that organized government should be overthrown by force or violence, or by assassination of the executive head or of any of the executive officials of government, or by any unlawful means. The advocacy of such doctrine either by word of mouth or writing is a felony in many U.S. states. Circa 1955, the United States Solicitor General said that forty-two States plus Alaska and Hawaii had statutes which in some form prohibited advocacy of the violent overthrow of established government.” [350 U.S. 497]

…and the take down of Confederate Monuments by the USA Gov’y is essentially a declaration of civil war against the Old South!

      1. Munkyman

It’s just a declaration of war on the actual history because the real history doesn’t paint the Union any better than the South.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” Joseph Goebbels – Nazi
