North Korea: strange narratives

The political-media elite clearly think ordinary people are completely stupid and totally gullible. Currently they are pushing two mutually exclusive narratives about North Korea. One is that North Korea is run by a dangerous dictator, who has the capacity to wreck massive death and destruction on neighbours in the region and even possibly on the western coast of America. The other is that North Korea is such an ecomonic basket case that it cannot even feed its own people let alone produce serious weapons, resorting to using fake weapons for its military parades.

The point about these narratives is that they cannot be both true. Indeed, it is possible that neither of them is true. So, let's ignore the lying political-media elite and think for ourselves. An obvious question is what do North Korea's neighbours think. Its closest neighbours are China, Russia and South Korea. Both China and Russia are opposed to the sabre rattling by the US. They are in favour of North Korea abiding by UN resolutions, but are equally supportive of international law, which does not allow force or the threat of force against North Korea for violations. South Korea's position is slightly more complicated. The ruling elite are concerned to represent North Korea as a threat, as part of their long standing alliance with the US. However, many ordinary South Koreans see, not North Korea as a threat, but the stepping up of tension, specifically the current installation of a US missile system, which threatens not only North Korea, but also China and Russia.

The logical inference to be drawn from these considerations is that the stepping up of tension between North Korea and the US has little or nothing to do with any supposed threat from North Korea, but is rather a justification for a further development of the military encirclement of both Russia and China. This is a dangerous strategy, for neither Russia nor China can fail to notice, nor can they fail to see the increasing encirclement as anything other an acts of aggression, and, as any self interested actor would, take action to defend themselves.

However, the political-media elite cannot simply explain the military build up honestly, as the vast majority of people would be opposed to such military adventurism. This is why they are reduced to absurd narratives: on the one hand, painting North Korea as massive military threat, and on the other, painting North Korea as a complete failure that is incapable of any effective action. North Korea is not the threat - the threat is US militarism.

The oil war has reeked havoc on the leftist regimes in Venezuela and Brazil (a BRICS nation) false flag adventurism is reeking havoc on the Russian client state of Syria. NATO has expanded into Eastern Europe, along with war games, regime change (Ukraine), and anti missile systems. Now we have anti-missile systems in S. Korea, Japan building aircraft (carrier) “destroyers”. NATO has expanded its role to Afghanistan, Libya, and anti-piracy ops off the coast of Somolia.

While competing and conflicting narratives (not false news) will allow the average conservative and progressive Joes to mindlessly argue talking points to no apparent end, anyone in power in Moscow or Peking who wasn’t brain dead has to be thinking we’re at war, it just hasn’t gone hot yet.

You left out one of my favorite contradictions: Saudi Arabia ramped up oil production to grab a bigger market share and undermine U.S. shale oil industry vs Saudi Arabia preparing for life after oil.

I am not persuaded by the resource grab theory, as the elite can buy (with imaginary money) any resources they want.

What would you consider as viable theories?

It is about US hegemony. They even wrote it down. The Project for a new American century was fundamental in this. Kagan was the prime author. He was advocating for regime change in Iraq from 1998 at least. His wife Victoria Nuland oversaw the regime change operation in the Ukraine.

Starvation can exist while money is being spent on weapons, if the people are sufficiently cowed or indoctrinated.
That fake missile was interesting because it seems to not have been fake so much as premature. A weapons “expert” noted that the tube seemed to be made from wound polymers that make for the lighter launch vehicle that is required for an ICBM to reach the USA from the DPRK. The citizens of the DPRK may be poor, but the “elites” there are very much not poor & the government certainly isn’t/

On your first sentence, it makes sense, just like — slavery existed only because the slaves were sufficiently cowed or indoctrinated. So somehow the people or slaves are the cause of the problem.

So you do not know who the offensive capacity is against. Maybe you know who is supposed to be defended?
